Responsibilities

  • Operating in a safe manner will take place over any other job function

  • Duties to include reporting and working under the Lead Signal Maintainer

  • Inspect and test gate crossings, signals, and signal equipment on active highway Grade Crossings

  • Inspect electrical units of railroad grade crossing gates to detect loose bolts, defective electrical connections and parts

  • Test signal circuit connections using standard electrical testing equipment

  • Replace defective wiring, broken lenses, and burned-out light bulbs

  • Lubricate moving parts on gate crossing mechanisms and swinging signals

  • Inspect batteries to ensure that batteries are filled with battery water or determine the need for replacement

  • Maintain high tension lines and de-energizing lines for power company as repairs are requested

  • Compile reports indicating mileage or track inspected, repairs made, and equipment requiring replacement

  • Maintain and repair Highway Grade Crossings in accordance with federal regulations

  • Comprehend electrical blueprints to troubleshoot, identify and correct various defects

Qualifications

  • Must have eight (8) years of Class I or Regional railroad (not volunteer) working experience

  • NORAC Rule qualifications preferred

  • NJ Transit or other signal territory experience and qualification preferred

  • 18 years of age or older

  • High School Diploma or equivalent

  • Must have a valid driver’s license

  • Must be authorized to work in the United States without company sponsorship

  • Able to work in geographic area assigned

  • Able to wear all required personnel protective equipment

  • Able to pass DOT physical, including auditory and visual requirements described in the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) Regulations of 49 CFR

  • Able to visually distinguish between colors, including red, green, blue, yellow and clear (lunar) light

  • Able to read, write and communicate (speak, hear and understand) English

  • Able to comprehend general, operating and other safety rules and instructions, timetables, bulletin orders, train orders, waybills, placards, company procedures, government regulations, maintenance procedures and instructions, memorandums and other work-related information

  • Able to pass all required training and testing

  • Able to see, interpret, and comply with hand signals (day and night)

  • Able to hear, interpret, and comply with whistle/horn signals

  • Able to accurately judge speed and distance of moving objects

  • Able to work on-call, 24 hours/day, 7 days/week, all hours of the day/night, including weekends and holidays

  • Able to arrive to assigned work location within 120 minutes of notification to report to work

  • Able to work outdoors in all weather conditions (heat, cold, rain, sleet, and snow)

  • Able to work on uneven surfaces, frequently climb ladders, work at various heights up to two stories above the ground, and work in an extremely safety sensitive environment

  • Able to work around loud noise, fumes

  • Able to work around moving machinery

  • Able to lift 30 lbs frequently, 50 lbs occasionally, 80 lbs infrequently, and carry up to waist height

  • Able to bend, life, walk, stand, sit and use hand tools for an extended time

  • Able to stoop, bend, kneel, crouch, crawl, balance, climb and work in confined areas

  • Able to use hands for activities involving holding, grasping, turning and pulling


Training

Will occur on the job, and will include classroom training, instruction in the field, and all requisite testing.

Work Conditions

Outdoors in all weather conditions, all hours of the day/night, all seasons of the year, on uneven surfaces and in an extremely safety sensitive environment.

Work Hours

May include on-call (24/7) component, and will include nights, weekends (and possibly holidays).
